: An Innovative Initiative :
: Concept Note :
Global Calendar of Classy Concerts
Very few News Papers/TV channels can cover the News/Advts/Previews/Reviews of Classical Concerts (Music & Dance). Pune is The Capital of Classical Concerts. Yet, only Daily Sakal covers it regularly. Non Marathi Audience remains hungry. Besides, media news is perishable .One can’t have quick access when one wants it. As such, music lovers don’t get the concert-information easily. Its, indeed, the Need of the Hour for Music Lovers all over the World. Internet is the best medium.
As a service to Lovers of Indian Classical Music all over the world, I plan to continue to include
“Global Calendar of Classy Concerts”: in www.malharaavishkar.com
Plan of Action:
On the basis of information received from Organizers, Artists & music lovers, I will continue to list the global events/programs/concert in next three months. I will try to include following info:
Time & Date: Exact Time ,Date, Duration, The significance/special occasion of the Day i.e. the founder’s day, Birth/Death Anniversary of great Gurus/Artists in whose memory the Concert is Organised etc.
The Organiser: Name of the Instn/Person to Contact/Tel No/e mail id
The Venue: Postal Address with Land Mark, Tel No…, Picture, Seating,
The Tickets: Rates, Source
The Artists & Accompanists: Bio Data, Tel No, Photo, Interview,
The Theme: like Ek Pariwar, Ek Malhar, Ek Sur Samay Ke Noor will be explained for better appreciation.
Database will be created for above info. The Calendar is the need of Music Lovers all over the world. They will have the concert-information well in-time. NRI/Foreign Music Lovers will be able to plan India Visits to coincide with favorite Festival. Such as : “ Savai ” & Malhar Aavishkar in Pune ,Banganga in Mumbai , Swami Harivallabh in Jalandhar , Sankat Vimochan in Banaras, Saptak in Ahemedabad, ITC Sangeet Sammelan in Kolkatta ! Even Resident Indians visiting Delhi/Calcutta/Mumbai/Pune/LA/SF/New Jersey/Sharaja will have easy access to concert information.
I would also like to post additional interesting features, like interviews, anecdotes audience feed back by e mail/SMS, Best Sellers, My Choice etc. The scope is vast.
But, needless to add ,its success depends upon the active co-operation of organizers, music-lovers , music writers and all other concerned.
Other Art Events like Painting Exhibitions, Workshops, Seminars, will be added in due course.
Please feel free to give your views/comments/advice to make it more users friendly

| An Innovative Initiative |
| Concept Note |
| Calendar of Classy Concerts /Calendar of Classy Events |
| |
| Very few News Papers/TV channels can cover the News/Advts/Previews/Reviews of Classical Concerts (Music & Dance). Pune is The Capital of Classical Concerts. Yet, only Daily Sakal covers it regularly. Non Marathi Audience remains hungry. Besides, media news is perishable .One can’t have quick access when one wants it. As such, music lovers don’t get the concert-information easily. Its, indeed, the Need of the Hour for Music Lovers all over the World. Internet is the best medium. |
As a service to Lovers of Indian Classical Music all over the world, I plan to include “ Global Calendar Classy Concerts ” : in www.malharaavishkar.com |
| Plan of Action: |
| On the basis of information received from Organizers, Artists & music lovers , I will list the global events/programs/concert in next three months. I will try to include following info: |
| Time & Date: Exact Time ,Date, Duration, The significance/special occasion of the Day i.e. the founder’s day, Birth/Death Anniversary of great Gurus/Artists in whose memory the Concert is Organised etc. |
| The Organiser: Name of the Instn/Person to Contact/Tel No/e mail id |
| The Venue: Postal Address with Land Mark, Tel No…, Picture, Seating, |
| The Tickets: Rates, Source |
| The Artists & Accompanists: Bio Data, Tel No, Photo, Interview, |
| The Theme : like Ek Pariwar, Ek Malhar, Ek Sur Samay Ke Noor will be explained for better appreciation. |
| I would also like to post additional interesting features, like interviews, anecdotes audience feed back by e mail/SMS, Best Sellers , My Choice etc. The scope is vast. But, needless to add its success depends upon the active co-operation of organisers and all other concerned. Other Art Events like Painting Exhibitions, Workshops, Seminars, will be added in due course. |
| An Appeal to Organisers : |
| (1) Pl e mail me the details of your concerts as soon as you finalise. Use the table- format above so that I can just copy paste your table in above Calendar. |
| (2) Pl e mail Artists Bio data with photographs |
| (3) Pl plan your Annual schedule of concerts/programs. Gaan Vardhan of Pune follows this discipline. It will help to curtail overlapping and cluttering. Music lovers will also be to plan concert attendance |
| Please feel free to give your views/comments/advice to make it more user friendly |

“Kathak- Parampara…Pravaaha”
Maneesha Nrityalaya Trust, Pune is glad to announce a Kathak dance concert titled ‘Kathak- Parampara…Pravaaha’, for the first time in Delhi with a troupe of 15 dancers. It is scheduled on the eve of ‘International Dance Day’, i.e. 28th April at the Kamani Auditorium. The founder and director of Maneesha Nrityalaya, Mrs. Maneesha Sathe, with her daughter and disciple Mrs. Shambhavi Vaze, will be performing along with the student members of Maneesha Nrityalaya’s performing unit.

Kathak, a dynamic classical dance form from the northern India has a rich traditional repertoire which showcases the intricacies of the footwork patterns, the fast spins, the graceful body movements and postures and the subtle, yet impressive abhinaya. One can experience all this in the ‘Parampara’ part of the concert which comprises of a ‘Vandana’, a ‘taal presentation’, a ‘Chatarang’ composed by the maestro Balwantrai Bhattacharya.
|
Desciples |
Desciples |
Kathak being a versatile dance form has been successful in coping up with the changing times. The ‘Pravaaha’ part of the concert will give us an opportunity to witness the different hues of Kathak with some explicit choreographies on cotemporary and world music compositions by maestros like Shankar Mahadevan, Taufiq Qureshi and many more. Sequences like ‘Antarman’ shall reflect the social issues of women, for instance, the dilemma an ambitious girl goes through while choosing between marriage and a career with high prospects. Renditions like ‘Vishwaninaad’ shall portray the true form of fusion.
‘Kathak- Parampara…Pravaaha’ is a concert for both connoisseurs and laymen. Today’s Kathak gives us a different outlook of the age-old dance form. However, through this concert, one will get the true insights of the traditions in Kathak, the ‘Pravaaha’, holding on to the ‘Parampara’.

1st of the Series Overview : 55th SAWAI GANDHARVA
MUSIC FESTIVAL By M K Pardhi |
|
|
The 55th annual Sawai
Gandharva Music Festival took off on last Thursday
(December 6, 2007) and soared high till Sunday (December
9). It made five flights during the four
days.
The festival is the hallmark of the
cultural life of Pune and presently the foremost among
the music festivals in India.
It was launched in
1952 by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, in co-operation with his
colleagues, to perpetuate the memory of his Guru,
Rambhau Kundagolkar, popularly known as Sawai Gandharva,
a disciple of the maestro Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and a
leading singer-actor of the Marathi theatre who had died
a year before. It began on a very meagre scale and grew
in popularity year after year.
Every year, a
sprawling pandal is erected which has now a seating
capacity of over ten thousand. Besides, hundreds of
listeners squat outside, in the open courtyard on both
sides of the spectacular pandal, wrapping themselves
with warm clothes to ward off the December
cold
Thousands of music lovers attend this
festival regularly. They come from all over Maharashtra
as well as from other States and also from abroad. For
many of them it is an annual pilgrimage.
Lately,
over the past three years, the timings of the music
sessions have changed, due to the law prohibiting noise
pollution. Formerly, there were three sessions held
during nights till the next morning. The audience
relished the hypnotic feel of the nightly music. Now
they have adjusted themselves to new timings of late
afternoon. To keep up with the number of artistes, the
number of sessions has been increased to five including
one in the morning of the consecutive
Sunday.
Discernible changes have been taking
place since the change in the managing body of the
festival three years ago. Under the stewardship of
Shrikant Deshpande, a band of young workers has been
giving a new polished look to the festival, without
disturbing its objectives and format and giving due
respect to the old guards. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi
continues to be the guiding star and play the role of
patriarch.
The new changes are aimed at
streamlining and disciplining the entire set- up and
providing comfortable amenities to the audiences. The
pandal and stage decoration has been modernised and
polished. This year, for the first time, a portrait of
Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, was displayed, along with the
usual Sawai Gandharva’s, on the stage. Huge screens were
installed inside and outside the pandal for live
telecast of the performers for the benefit of distant
audiences
This year there were some innovations
in the programme pattern for the benefit of audiences as
well as artistes. Short films on certain veteran
artistes were screened in an auditorium elsewhere. These
included those of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, late Pandit
Kumar Gandharva and Bharat Natyam dancer Alarmel Valli.
The film on Alarmel Valli was also screened at the time
of her performance on the stage.
Several
artistes, particularly young ones, who performed in the
festival, were interviewed separately at other places
where they expressed their views and experiences on
music. Every artiste at the time of his performance was
introduced in English and Marathi, on the stage. An
impressive exhibition of photographs of artistes who
participated in the festival over the past three decades
was held at the festival venue. The blank intermissions
between two performances were filled up with the
pre-recorded recital of Sanskrit prayer to Goddess
Saraswati in the voice of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. The
festival has also started a website of its own to elicit
reactions of music lovers at large.
The festival
is keen on presenting a few up-coming artistes along
with well established ones every year. Generally there
are two dozens of main performers, apart from their
accompanists. This year there were 23. Among them were
Thespians like Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Hariprasad
Chaurasia, Pandit Firoz Dastur, Shrimati Malini Rajurkar
and Shrimati Prabha Atre. Among others were second
generation artistes such as Shujat Khan (son of Ustad
Vilayat Khan) on Sitar, Rahul Sharma (son of Pandit
Shivkumar Sharma) on Santoor, Murad Ali (disciple of
Sabri Khan) on Sarangi, Sandeep Apte (disciple of Ustad
Vilayat Khan) on Sitar and vocalist Vijay Sardeshmukh
(disciple of Kumar Gandharva). Other established
artistes were Shrimati Arati Anklikar–Tikekar, Gundecha
Brothers, Vyankateshkumar, Kaivalya Kumar Gurav, Ulhas
Kashalkar, Shrikant Deshpande, Vijay Sardeshmukh, Ajay
Pohankar and Vinod Digrajkar. This year Carnatik system
of music came into prominence with vocalist Shrimati
Sudha Raghunathan, violinist L.Subrahmanyam and Bharat
Natyam dancer Shrimati Alarmel Valli, all the three
greatly renowned in their respective
fields.
Invariably all the eminent artistes who
come from other parts of the country from year to year
speak very highly about the Pune audiences. They say
that no where else in the country they are appreciated
so lavishly and understandingly as at this festival.
Such sentiments were expressed this year by Sitarist
Shujat Khan, flutist Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Santoor
player Rahul Sharma and violinist
L.Subrahmanyam.
A short recital by Pandit Bhimsen
Joshi was the memorable event of this festival.
Generally the festival concludes with his majestic
recital. But he could not give a performance due to ill
health for the past three years. Therefore his
unexpected recital this year was received by the
audiences as the drops of first rain from the clouds
into the year-long thirsty beak of Chatak bird.

55th SAWAI GANDHARVA MUSIC
FESTIVAL 6th Dec
2007 : from 4.00 pm onward By M K Pardhi |
|
|
The festival opened
customarily with an auspicious Shehnai recital. The
artistes were Gayakwad brothers of Baroda whose
grandfather had enjoyed the patronage of Sayajirao
Gayakwad, king of the then princely state. Accompanied
by Himanshu Mahant on Tabla, they played Raga Bhimpalas
to the gait of Trital and a Dhoon in an assorted Raga
Dhani to the gait of Kerwa Tal for about half an
hour. |
| Sh Anand Bhate |
|
Then followed Anand Bhate, a
young disciple of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Initially he was
acclaimed as a child prodigy for his uncanny imitation
of popular Marathi theatre songs of the great
singer-actor Bal Gandharva. Then hailed as ‘Anand
Gandharva’, he had given hundreds of full-fledged
performances far and wide.
The juvenile
tenderness of his voice is now moulding into a robust
virility during his training under Bhimsenji for about
two decades past. His rendition was an obvious imitation
of the Guru’s style, including the in-drawn application
of voice which ascended up to Tar Pancham.
Anand
delineated Raga Yaman with the traditional Khyal ‘Kahe
Sakhi’ set to slow-paced Ektal and the complementary
composition ‘Sakhi aeri aali piyabina’ set to mid-paced
Trital. Then he sang the Guru’s favourite devotional
song ‘Kanhoba tuzi ghongadi’ with a catchy rhythm. His
last piece was Bal Gandharva’s favourite Abhang ‘Johar
maay baap’ which reminisced of Bal Gandharva’s caressing
mannerisms.
On the whole, Anand’s performance was
mild, if not dull. But it built up a solid pedestal for
the artistes to follow. He was accompanied on harmonium
by Suyog Kundalkar and on Tabla by Bharat Kamat, both
skilled on their respective instruments. |
| S’Sh Gundecha Bandhu |
|
Gundecha Brothers, Umakant
and Ramakant, of Bhopal have earned a wide reputation
for their Dhrupad style. They sing together and are
esteemed high among the few exponents of this ancient
exalted genre of music. They have also rendered poems of
renowned Hindi poets in this style and have built up a
Dhrupad institution in Bhopal. They have groomed a
sonorous, weighty and broad voice.
They selected
the lofty Raga Shree. They exposed it with expansive
Alap which is the mainstay of this music form. It is
called Non Tom because it is done without words with the
help of syllables like Non Tom. Their Alap work
consisted of thundering, rumbling, hopping, surfing,
soaring, groping, meandering phrases executed with the
help of embellishments such as Gamak, Meend,
etc
The Alap part is complemented with word-songs
which generally praise gods like Shiva and Ganesh and
indulge in an exciting play of rhythms set to different
Tals. This was done by Gundecha Brothers with a Dhamar
(a song type) called after the name of its Tal) of
opening words ‘Achar rang bhijan lagi’. The recital
concluded with a short Dhrupad (a song type) in Raga
Adana set to Shool Tal of ten beats.
A Dhrupad
recital always takes Pakhwaj (also called Mridang) for
accompaniment. The grave and rumbling sound of this
instrument appropriately enhances the exalted impact of
Dhrupad compositions. This impact was all the more
enhanced by Manik Munde and Akhilesh Gundecha on their
respective instruments.
The recital charged the
whole atmosphere with resounding sound waves and
provided a lift for the oncoming performers |
| Ustd Murad Ali |
|
Murad Ali,
a young disciple of Sabrikhan and Ahmed Khwaja, came to
the stage with his Sarangi. This instrument is difficult
to handle and therefore gradually vanishing from vogue.
It is extremely melodious. Murad Ali has been handling
it since childhood and had won the first prize at the
All India Radio competition at the tender age of
ten.
He intoned the pensive Raga Puriya-Kalyan
with the subtle nuances of its notes to a very slow
movement of Ektal, complementing it with two Gats, one
set to mid-paced Trital and the other to fast Ektal. He
added a sprightly Dadra in an assorted Raga Khamaj and,
on the cheering demand from the audience, a short light
Dhoon intoned like the popular Thumri ‘Aye na
balam’.
There was not much spark in his
rendition; but it maintained purity of
tradition.
Aman Ali Khan gave a stylish
accompaniment on Tabla. |
| Smt Arati
Anklikar-Tikekar |
|
The session
came to an end with an extremely high-flown recital by
Arati Anklikar-Tikekar.
Arati is a prominent
vocalist of the present generation. She has been giving
performances at home and abroad for the past two
decades. Initially trained in the Jaipur school by the
virtuoso Kishori Amonkar, she has borrowed from other
schools also, and has evolved a very elegant style of
her own.
She is one of those rare musicians who
are completely absorbed and rejoice their own music
while singing. She sings with her entire personality.
She has a keen sense of rhythm and sways with the
rhythmic swings. Within an instant her voice dips to the
Kharja (bass) notes and soars to the Tar notes. She has
mastered an immense variety of Tans and rhythm phrases.
But all along her full-throated and forceful expressions
verged on shrill wailings in the high
pitches.
Arati began with an unfamiliar Raga,
namely Kaushik-Ranjani (almost similar to Chandrakamsa
with Shuddha Re). She unfolded it with soulful Alaps
fringed with crisp curls, set to the very slow gait of
Roopak Tal. The words of the refrain were “Ae more
sajanka”. It was complemented with a composition with
the refrain “Rooth gaye savariya”, which was set to
mid-paced Trital. There were innumerable sorties of
variegated Tans and frisky jumps from low to high and
vice versa.
Her playful mood heightened during
the short melodies which followed. Among them the first
was a mid-paced Trital composition in Raga Hemant
describing the beauty of the Hemant (pre-winter) season.
The other was a sound play ‘Zanan zanan baje’ set to
fast ektal. They abounded in spiral Tans and waves of
rhythmic phrases uttered in one breath. The next was a
song set to an odd Tal Sunand of nine and a half beats.
Bowing to the cheerful audience demand for a Marathi
song, she sang the emotional lyric “Mee Radhika”. She
concluded her bountiful recital with two devotional
Abhangs in Raga Bhairavi. One of them was “Awagha rang
ek zala” and the other was “Meepana gele”, both set to
lilting fast gait of Kerwa Tal.
Ramdas Palsule
and Dhananjay accompanied her on Tabla and Pakhwaj
respectively. Harmonium was played by Milind Kulkarni, a
promising youngster. |

Celebrate Bandra Trust organised series of events in the Bandra vicinity, to promote the queen of suburbs and towards global peace. While the programmes included all types of performing arts like rock music, jazz dance, etc, it was interesting to note that classical dances too were performed which is quite encouraging, as this is one way of taking classical arts to the comman man, as most of the performances were free and people were welcome to attend.
One such evening, last week at the Bandra promenade, presented Bharata natyam and Odissi. Bharata natyam was presented by talented dancer Prachi Saathi. Prachi Saathi is the disciple of Guru Lata Raman for more than eight years. Her performance was noteworthy for its techinical quality, precise and distinct movements and for the command over expressional dancing. Tall and slim, Prachi has a charming personality and she carried herself quite well during the performance.
After the invocation, Prachi performed the Kamas Swarajathi that formed a fine synthesis between music and melody and fortunately for Prachi, her mentor Guru Lata Raman was the vocalist too. Guru Lata Raman is an accomplished Bharata natyam exponent who has produced several high ranking students. Her musical rendering adds colour and richness to the entire performance and it was a treat to watch the dancer, dancing with complete involvement and enthusiasm. Prachi concluded the performance with an intricate Darbari Kanada Thillana that revealed her command over rhythmic patterns and pure dance.

The Odissi ensemble were the students of accomplished Odissi exponent Lisa Mohanty, who is the disciple of Guru Deba Prasad Das. Odissi style is known for its elegant, lyrical and torso deflections which is based on the "lasya" style of dancing. It was a visual delight to watch the dancers performing in uniformity and harmony, creating a fine synchronisation between music and dance. After the invocatory Manglacharan, the piece-de-resistance of the evening was the dramatic dispplay of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, like Rama, Balarama, Krishna, Buddha, Kalki etc, wherein lord Vishnu appears in a parituclar 'avatara' to fight against evil and 'adharma'. Lisa Mohanty has several performances to her credit and has also written a book on Odissi., she trains young aspirants at her academy in Powai. On the whole it was a wonderful initiative. |

| Review of Bharat Sangeet
Utsav 2007 |
|
Even the sun has no
choice except to toe the line – rise early and set late
- as does the music season in Chennai. The music
festival occupies more space and spreads from September
and extends well into January and if you thought you had
missed some particular artiste there is always scope to
fulfil your desire sooner or later.
Carnatica and Sri Parthasarathi Swamy Sabha
together got up a mega event in Chennai, the Bharat
Sangeet Utsav - 2007. This was held at Narada Gana Sabha
from November 1st to 11th.
The event was
inaugurated at a function at the Hotel Residency Towers
on Oct. 31st, where after a brief inaugural attended by
social eminences and danseuse Sudharani Raghupathy,
violin maestro T. N. Kishnan floored the invited guests
with a two-hour cameo of pristine pure Carnatic
Music.
At Narada Gana Sabha next day, the real
fest began with Mangala Isai (Nagaswaram) by Bangalore
Kothandaraman followed by the lighting of the
Kuthuvilakku by Fred Kaplan of the US Consulate in
Chennai. The stage was a spectacular set up done by
Thota Tharani (of opulent cine-sets fame). The fresh
flowers – Maruvu, Dhavanam,Thulasi, Saamandhi and Malli
– lent it a natural glow. The effort in decoration
really combined with good taste and imagination to make
the stage look beautiful, yet simple. And it was in sync
with the minds of the protagonists.
The main
concert of the day was by T M Krishna, with
Ramanujacharyulu on the violin, Sangita Kalanidhi
Umayalpuram Sivaraman on the mridangam and Sunder Kumar
on the Khanjira. No prizes for guessing who the star
attraction was – Sivaraman of course. Krishna sang a
fine neraval at Vedha Sasthra Purana (Sankarabharanam)
and Sri Sivaraman's accompanying and his thani with
Sunder Kumar had its own reverberative quality.
Following the concert was a dance special – Ashtapadhi
by Swarnamalya and Shrijith Nambiar - love-lyrics
portrayed through the medium of dance. Mrs. Anuradha
Sriram was the singer and was on debut, we were told,
for a dance performance, and there was ease and elegance
in her singing. But then, was impeccable English chosen
on the plea of catering to an International
audience?
Day two saw Sikkil Gurucharan
performing, with Nagai Sriram on the violin, Mannargudi
Easwaran on the mridangm and Purushothaman on the
Khanjira followed by a Hindustani concert by Ashwini
Bhide Deshpande whose sonorous voice exhibited a range
that was wide and stunning. Vishaka Hari’s Sangeetha
Upanyasam, the talk of the town, was an overflowing full
house performance. Contrast this with the frivolous
serials on TV – unending stories which leave a message
that the normal housewife can manoeuver – to – kill and
is endowed with men and material for this brutal task.
People therefore are visibly fed up and would want to
extricate themselves from these idiotic non-varying
idiotic shows that repeatedly sully the mind and shred
the soul. The audiencestrength is an indirect measure of
this frustration. The wages of watching TV is death and
let us therefore redeem ourselves by listening to
Vishaka Hariji.
Came Day three and an
all-important educative symposium on Voice Culture and
Singing Styles was held. The participants were Sri T V
Goplakrishnan, Dr. Shriram Parasuram, Dr. S A K Durga
and two hindustani exponents Smt. Ashwini Bhide and Smt.
Kalapini Komkali. The vidwans narrated their
experiences, methods they willy-nilly adopted to reach
where they were now, cautioned against imitative
singing, and the futility of endless practice sessions,
judicious use of your own voice and fielded questions
from Dr. Prapancham Sitaram and others. Smt. Ashwini
mentioned the 303 shot where the swara is supposedly at
the centre and we (that should read they) hover around
the periphery and make attempts to hit the bull’s
eye.
Sowmya always has many things up her
sleeve. That gentle breeze that blew as an alapana of
Durbar - the varnam had started even before the alapana
had ended, “Evvare”, a special ekaika krithi of the
Sadguru in Gangeyabhooshani (a listeners request!), an
alapana of Hamsanandhi that invited a review that it had
Hindustani sprays and then a Thodi as Thodi should be.
RK (i.e. R K ShriramKumar) was on the violin. We had the
unobtrusive J Vaidhyanathan on the mridangam and a fresh
“scholar” in music, Dr. Karthik on the Ghatam.
Unnikrishnan’s concert that followed (both from the same
Guru, Dr. S. Ramanathan) was after his own style. The
accompaniments were Varadharajan on the violin, K V
Prasad on the mridangam and B S Purushothaman on the
Khanjira.
On day four Smt. Kalapini Komkali
(daughter and disciple of the illustrious Kumar
Gandharv) gave a morning concert with her deep bass
voice which seemed only to illustrate the kharj riyaz
(mandhara sthayi) regimen she had been into. She had
spoken of this elaborately on the previous day about
this practice.
Pandit Suhas Vyas son of Sri Vyas
(Guru of Sriram Parasuram) sang in the next slot
followed by Aruna Sairam’s concert with Padma Shankar on
the violin, JV on the mridangam, Karthik on the Ghatam
and Manian on the Ganjira. Sanjay landed with an alapana
of Poornachandrika and a rarely sung krithi of GNB,
VaradhaniGunanalina. Unnai Allaal Vere Gathi
(Kalyani-Sivan) was rendered with complete accent on
Bhava. He had Nagai Muralidharan on the violin and
Mannargudi Easwaran on the mridangam and K V
Goplakrishnan on the Ganjira and these percussionists
together gave a highly competitive thani.
Day
Five witnessed Sherthalai Ranganatha Sharma’s concert,
followed by O S Arun, with his lilting Bhajans and a
special Jugal Sangeet with Vishwa Mohan Bhat on the
Mohan Veena and Ravikiran on the Chitraveena.
The
next day being the sixth day we had a concert by
Suryaprakash. He needs to work on many things, it
appeared . He had formidable accompaniments in the form
of MAS (M A Sundareswaran) on the violin and Raja Rao on
the mridangam and E M Subramaniam on the
ghatam.
Nithyashri dedicated her concert to Smt.
D K Pattammal but the concert admittedly was a bit low
key and lacked the “authoritative singing”, this popular
artiste is known for. She was accompanied by Raghavendra
Rao on the violin, Skandasubramaniam on the mridangam
and Tiruchi Murali on the Ghatam.
Pandit
Shivkumar Sharma played the Santoor and dedicated his
concert to the late Sri Vishveswaran, his disciple.
Sharmaji dealt with only one raga Jenjuti, but has the
Santoor now become only an “effect” instrument
?
There was some respite for the organizers as
day seven and eight were declared holidays on account of
Deepavali.
Back from Deepavali on day nine,
Geetha Rajasekhar sang to the accompaniment of Mysore
Srikanth and Sangeetha Kalanidhi Vellore
Ramabadhran.
Prof.V V Subramaniam gave his
interpretation and explained the purpose of each raga
and tried to drive home the point that each raga is
functional in nature. Someone in the audience in sotto
voce said this “Is it really Bhaktha on the mridangam –
not to be heard at all?” and so draw your own
conclusions. We had V V S Murari as violin support and
Vaikkom on the Ghatam.
Poonkuyil Pattammal, a
thematic presentation on Sangitha Kalanidhi Smt. D K
Pattammal by Smt. Gowri Ramnarayanan had Vijay Siva
singing Pattammal’s popular melodies with Tamil
narratives for each song by Gowri. Vijay Siva took
utmost care to present the songs as pure-gold-versions
to evoke memories of the original - fully and truly. He
had RK on the violin and Manoj Siva on the mridangam.
Poonkuil Koovum Solayil (Balama Aaye of K L Sehgal) was
at its sweetest.
On Day Ten, some revelations
were made. Getting on stage to perform needs a lot of
preparation and if you are a serious student of music
then you will have to pass through many stages before
you reach this destination – the stage. Young stars were
put through tests of many kinds and the “Carnatic Idol”
was found and anointed. Read more of it in detail at
www.carnatica.net.
Gayathri Venkatraghavan’s
concert was in the evening with Padma Shankar on the
violin, Ganapathyraman on the mridangam and Guruprasad
on the Ghatam. Sudha Raghunathan – did she try something
experimental. You do not change your position vis a vis
the mike but the voice thins and thickens. Contrast
effect. It was something akin to the flute or the
nagswaram emitting a full blown sound and a restrained
sound depending on the controlled blow.
Let us
march on to Day Eleven The daring dynamic Ms
Subashree Thaickachalam presented a “Ragamalika”, in the
morning beat and had commissioned young playback singers
for her show.
In the evening there was the
Valedictory function and the release of a CD- Rare
Padams and Varnams – A tribute to Brindamma, by Smt.
Alamelu Mani and Mrs. Kalyani Sharma. His Excellency,
the Governor of Tamil Nadu, graced the occasion with his
presence and the connoisuer of art that he is, listened
to Hariharan’s Ghazals for an hour or so. Hariharan’s
music has a certain all-embracing quality. Those who had
gathered, irrespective of their standing as musicians or
music lovers were willing to lose themselves for the
entire 150 minutes, sumptuously applauding. What a
finale! Remember the concept of TOMA (Top Of Mind
Awareness) – Yes! This will remain at the top of
everyone’s mind and really will become one of the many
positive identification marks in the personality of
Carnatica.
Statistics is not a dumb thing and it
speaks. Eleven days (there were two holidays) – 17
carnatic music concerts, 4 hindustani concerts, 2
veteran violinists on stage, 2 veteran mridangists on
stage, young stars on stage, an interactive symposium,
carnatic idol talent hunt, a dance, a Harikatha - many
bells were ringing to excite and enthuse you. Everyone
was left in wonderment and were “even” in their
appreciation. Some expressed it openly, while others had
their hearts full - evidenced by their warm handshakes.
Got reminded of VIBGYOR, of the words family, community,
challenges, standards, adequacy et al and Carnaticas
executive team Ramanthan, Sashikiran, Sowmya and the
indefatigable Jayashri showed guts and seemed to possess
a decent pulse rate. These “Combo” (to use the state of
the art expression) events - if they were successful
must have been discussed threadbare before they attained
finality. Were there some hiccups? The mikemen were
adequate, save the few minor flaws here and there and
you could afford to ignore it. Other hurdles there could
have been some but was never reflected in the
sessions.
Hold it ! - the write-up is not over.
These donor passes and all that - One word, the entire
concerts and events were in fact free. It requires real
tact and sagacity to achieve this. Do it the same way,
if not in a better manner year after year. Oh! You've
already started planning! Say Something! Here is a
wish-list for the next programme. Let us have Hariprasad
Chaurasia, Kalyanapuram Aravamudhachariar, K S
Goplakrishnan, Panthula Rama, Manda Sudharani,
Nedhanuri, Manjunath and Nagaraj and Pattabhiram
Pandit....Granted?

PUSHKAR LELE (http://www.pushkarlele.com/)
|
|
| The 54th edition of the prestigious and
much awaited Sangeet (and not just music!)
Mahotsav began at the New English School Ramanbaug, Pune
at 4 pm sharp with the mellifluous strains of the
shehenai by Sh. Shailesh Bhagwat. |
|
| Music lovers had already started
trickling in the huge pandal right from the
beginning, determined not to miss even a moment of the
four day musical feast! Areas for the chair ticket
holders and the Indian sitting (Bharatiya
Baithak) were neatly marked with efficient
volunteers displaying prominent badges ushering the
Rasiks to their delegated seats. Four big
screens (sponsored by SHARP) caught the action on the
stage and beamed it for the larger mass of audience
outside the pandal and for those who were too far from
the stage to see things clearly. The picture quality was
really good as was the sound system by
‘Swaranjali’. Although the huge traditional
backdrop bedecked with beautiful flowers for the stage
area was missing, it was more than compensated by the
neat flower arrangements at the front side of the stage
was well as the ceiling. A separate area was created for
the press photographers and media representatives in
order to cause minimum trouble to the performing artiste
on stage as well as the audience. ‘Please NO FLASH’
boards were prominently displayed in this area to avoid
frayed nerves mid-concert by the artiste. |
|
| Sh. Shailesh Bhagwat., disciple of the
shehenai maestro Ustad Bismillah Khan Sahib
began his concert with Raag Hansakinkini, a
raag expressing the feelings of a newly wed
bride. He played the panghat dhun in this raag
reminding the keen audience of Pune of the late Ustad.
After the alap, he presented two gats in
Madhya and drut teentaal. Bhagwat
followed it by a dhun in dadra Taal
lending an auspicious start to the grand musical
extravaganza. He was accompanied by Mukand Pandit
(disciple of Pt. Nayan Ghosh) on the tabla,
Dinesh Mavdikar on the surpeti and the duo of
Prem Shankar-Vijay Shankar as shehenai support. On a
personal note, I fail to understand why a shehenai
recital should always be scheduled as the first item on
the first day, year after year. Why should the
shehenai be always associated with ‘auspicious
beginnings’ when the legendary Ustad Bismillah Khan
devoted all his life to establish the shehenai
as an independent ‘solo’ instrument. Why should the
shehenai for once not be treated like another solo
instrumental performance as the second or third item
instead of the first? I hope that someone points this
out to the organizing committee and they for once by
this simple gesture give shehenai the status
that it truly deserves. |
|
|
The second artiste who came on stage was
Meena Phatarpekar, grand-daughter of the doyen of
Kirana Gharana Pt. Saraswatibai Rane.
Phatarpekar has been fortunate to learn from two of the
great legends of namely Hirabai Badodekar (although
briefly) and her equally gifted sister Saraswatibai
Rane. At a time when music as a career or profession or
even as a hobby was not considered respectable,
especially for Brahmin women, this fiery sister
duo traveled the length and breadth of India singing
together on stage! However Phatarpekar seemed to lack
any of these legacies. She stared with Raag Yaman
Kalyan (a wrong choice of raag for the
time of 5pm and unfair to other artiste to follow later)
and sang the khayal ‘Salona Re’ in Vilambit
Jhoomra followed by ‘Mangala Gao’ in
drut teentaal. This was followed by an equally
lack-luster thumri ‘Aba ke Saawana ghara aaja’ in Mishra
Khamaj (Madhya gram) set in Deepchandi (14 beats). She
was accompanied on tabla by Sameer Shivgaar and on
harmonium by Pramod Marathe. Nirmala Kasbekar and Dr.
Mugdha Bapat accompanied on the Taanpura. |
|
 |
|
|
After this ‘the less said the better’
performance, it was the turn of the Sarangi duo Dilshad
Khan and Shabir Khan, the nephew and son of Ustad Sultan
Khan. Belonging to the 10th generation of Sikar
Gharana, this disciple duo of Ustad Sultan Khan
began with Raag Madhuwanti. The leisurely
alap deftly spanning all the three
Saptaks was followed by two gats in
Vilambit teentaal and drut ektaal.
Both had a very good tone of their Sarangi with
Dilshad’s being a little more ‘open or fuller’. However
one could not miss the nazakat of Shabir
either. Both of them complimented each other skillfully
from start to finish and displayed no ‘I am going to eat
you’ tendancies! Their deep understanding of the
accuracy of sur, raag, laya and their
instrument was noteworthy. Mid concert, out of the blue
and much to everyone’s delight Pandit Bhimsen Joshi’s
car drove close to the stage! Because of his ill-health
Panditji was not able to sing last year. But in spite of
his frail condition, ‘the lion’ drove down majestically
to catch a few moments of the Sangeet yadnya
which he had started 53 years back. He waited
patiently in the car till the duo finished raag
madhuwanti. He addressed the audience while still
sitting in the car through a microphone and live
camera’s catching the master speak. Pandit said that it
is only with the help and blessings of the people and
artistes from all Gharana-s that the Sawai Gandharva
Sangeet Samaroha has reach the 54th year and expressed
the hope that even after his death the festival shall
continue to grow and remain as dear to people as it is
today. It was a poignant moment filled with emotions.
Dilshad and Shabir came down and sought Panditji’s
blessings, a touching gesture indeed. After his car
drove back, the duo continued with their performance and
presented a dadra (Pata raakho na raakho tehari
marji) in Raag Pilu. They were ably
accompanied on tabla by Mukesh Jadhav. Thus it was a
melodious sahavadan and not a Jugalbandi
as most refer to it. |
|
 |
|
|
The fourth item of the evening was
Shashwati Mandal, the grand-daughter of late Pt.
Balabhau Umdekar, the erudite exponent of Gwalior
Gharana and a court musician of the
Gwaliorstate. Shashwati was initially trained
by her mother Smt. Kamal Mandal and later by Pt.
Balasaheb Poochwale (especially for tappa
gayaki). Currently she is taking guidance from Mira
Rao (disciple of Pt. Kumar Gandharva) and also from
Gundecha brothers. Mandal began her concert with Raag
Saraswati. She presented a khayal ‘Aye Darabaar’
in Vilambit ektaal followed by a drut
bandish ‘Jage more bhaag ghara more aaye’ in
teentaal. She explored the various nook and corners
of Saraswati through a systematic
aalapi and bol-banav. Mandal has a
naturally gifted pliable voice which she uses to her
advantage effectively. Her sargams, cascading
brilliant taans in one breath, lay
Kari and clear pronunciation were the highlights of
her presentation. However she needs to pay a little more
attention to clarity of notes in higher tempo. Later she
presented a difficult tappa in Raag Sohoni-
‘Vari Ve Mukhada Sohavana’ in Punjabi
theka followed by a Tarana in ati-drut
teentaal. After a prodding
‘please-keep-singing-till- the next-artiste- is –ready’
from the organizers, she sang a Meera Bhajan
‘Sawariya mhane aaja rangili ganagaur ji’ a famous
record by Kumarji. She had the well balanced
accompaniment of Ramdas Palsule (senior disciple of Pt.
Suresh Talwalkar) and Suyog Kundalkar (disciple of Dr.
Arawind Thatte) on the harmonium. |
|
 |
|
|
The day reached its musical pinnacle by
the masterly recital of the maestro of
Rampur-Sehswan Gharana Ustad Rashid Khan. He
began his concert with Raag Bihag and presented four
compositions in it. The khayal ‘Mero mana’ in
Vilambit ektaal was a leisurely exploration of
bihag with shudda nishad-shuddha
madhyam phrases being used prominently in it. This
was followed by ‘Aeri ma surajhana’ in
Madhya jhaptaal, ‘aali ri alabeli’
in drut teentaal and a Tarana
again in drut teentaal. Ustadji’s
sargams, taan patterns and nom-tom
were simply electrifying. After this he presented a
bandish in Raag Jog in Madhya
jhaptaal-‘Batein banavata’ and finally by the
thumri ‘ Brija ko chali Radha’ in Bhairavi
set to addha teentaal. He had the expert
accompaniment of Yogesh Samsi on tabla and Sudhir Nayak
on the harmonium. The concert went well upto 11.30pm as
the honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri.
Vilasrao Deshmukh sent a message that the 10pm Supreme
Court deadline has been giving an extention till 12am
for the dates of 7th, 8th and 10th of the Sawai
Mahotsav. |
|
|
Before the actual performances began, two
minutes silence was observed to pay tribute to late
Bismillah Khan, music director Naushad, Kirana Gharana
doyen Saraswatibai Rane, exponent of the bhendi-bazaar
Gharana Pt. Trimbakrao Jannorikar, lavani artiste Kamal
Sonawane, bhajan singer Shankar Golwalkar, sitarist
Sudhir Phadke, Sarangi exponent Madhukar Khadilkar,
senior vocalist Babanrao Navdikar, music experts B.V.
Bhatawadkar and S.G. Madhavbhatt. A calendar titled
‘Gandharva Parva’ featuring photographs of various
eminent vocalists better know for their ‘gandharva’
titles like Balgandharva, Kumar Gandharva, Chota
Gandharva, Bhu Gandharva etc was released by Sumantai
Kirloskar. The calendar has been the laborious work of
famous photographer Satish Paknikar. |

| Kaushiki steals the show on
day 2 of Sawai 2006 |
|
|
The second day of the 54th Sawai
Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav began with the vocal recital
of Agra Gharana exponent Sh Kamlakar Naik from Goa. A
disciple of Ratnakant Ramnathkar, V. R. Athavale,
Babanrao Haldankar, Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki and Ust Aslam
Khan, Kamlakarji chose to present Raag Barva. He
presented ‘Birama rahe mana’ in vilambit
tilwada followed by ‘Baje mori payaliya in
Madhya-drut teentaal. Displaying the lay
Kari typical of the Agra Gharana, he then sang the
lesser heard Raag Ram Gauri. He again presented a
tilwada (Hu jo gayi ri) and a drut teentaal
(Sapane mein darasa gayi pitama). He concluded his
concert with a bhajan Sab jhoote jaga ke ye naate.
Naik could not have got a better birthday gift than
the opportunity to sing in this prestigious music
festival. “This is a festival where the artistes of
highest caliber get to perform in front of the most
discerning audience of Pune. I am truly fortunate to
have got this opportunity”, said Naik. He was ably
accompanied on tabla by Bharat Kamat and Suyog Kundalkar
on the harmonium. |

Next came the grand-daughter of Sawai
Gandharva (wife of Prabhakar Deshpande), Padma
Deshpande. Deshpande had the good fortune to learn from
great gurus like Hirabai Badodekar, Saraswatibai Rane,
Digambarbua Kulkarni, Duttasingh Geherwal was well as
Vijay Karandikar and Shrikant Deshpande. She started her
performance with the popular raag of Kirana Gharana
Shuddha Kalyan. The khayal ‘Tuma bina kaun’ in
vilambit ektaal was followed by ‘Mangala
bajore bajo’ in drut teen Taal. She wound up
the concert with the popular Natyageet ‘Rupabali to
narashardula’ from Sangeet Swayamwar. She
was accompanied by Prashant Pandav on tabla and Dr.
Arawind Thatte on the harmonium. |

Next was the turn of the much awaited
maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma. Before Panditji came
on stage the audience was informed that the eminent film
director Dr. Jabbar Patel would be shooting the concert
live for a Films Division documentary on panditji and
that the audience should co-operate for any
inconvenience. It was on the express insistence of
panditji himself that Dr. Patel did the shooting. “When
people ask me, specially from the electronic
media, that does anyone still listen to classical musicm
I tell them to come and visit Sawai once. Only those who
have never listened to classical music ask such
questions. And once they come to Sawai, they never ask
it again!”, said panditji. As panditji began his
concert with his favorite Raag Rasik Priya (beloved of
the connoisseurs), Swarabhaskar Pandit Bhimsen Joshiji’s
car drove towards the stage. There was a loud clapping
in the audience and made one remind of the reverence and
high regard that this great man commands. Bhimsenji
remained silent and heard Shivji’s apal-jod-jhala in
rapt attention. He then drove back just as silently as
he came. Shivji then presented three gats in
Madya-rupak and the next two in drut
teentaal. After the mesmerizing Rasik priya, he
presented a pahadi-dhun based on an old dadra. He had
the expert accompaniment of Aneesh Pradhan on the tabla.

The next artiste and performance can
easily be called as the pinnacle of the festival till
now. A superb performance is always expected from the
senior maestros. But when someone so young hits the
audience, electrifies them to a very high plane and
leave them speechless, then it is much more commendable
and praise worthy. That was Kaushiki Chakrawarty
(daughter of Pt. Ajay Chakrawarty) for the audience! The
coy girl, dressed in a red-green sari make a pretty
picture on stage bedecked by confidence, a sweet smile,
calmness and humility. Armed with a supple flexible and
blemish less voice, a natural flair for speed, superb
voice modulation, accuracy of notes, an easy range of 3
Saptak and an deep understanding of Laya Taal, she
simply floored the audience. Kaushiki selected Raag
Raagshri and presented three compositions in it namely
‘Mohe Saba Sukha Deho Karataar’ in vilambit
ektaal, ‘Mora mana harawa’ in drut
teentaal and ‘Raag ranga raagini’ a
bandish by her guru Gyanprakash Ghosh in drut
ektaal. She then presented a popular pahadi-dadra
‘Rangi Saari gulabi chunariya re’. On the
insistence and demand of the audience she sang a Ganpati
Bhajan- Gaiye ganapati jaga vandana in Yaman-Kalyan. She
caught the right mood of the dadra and her murkis
and khatkas added a new dimention to the
masterly performance. She is one young talent that’s
surely going to make it big real soon! So watch this
space! She was accompanied on tabla by Ramdas Palsule
and Sudhir Nayak on the harmonium. Srinivas Joshi, son
of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi later came on stage and said that
Kaushiki has left the audience simply speechless. A
truly brilliant performance indeed! |

The evening’s last artiste was Sangeet
Martand Pandit Jasraj. He rendered the soulful ‘Jay jay
siddhi’ in vilambit ektaal in Raag Jayjaywanti followed
by Darasa deta in drut teentaal. He followed this by
‘Yeri ma sakala bana gagana’ in Madhya-teen Taal in Raag
khamaj-bahar. He ended the concert with two bhajans. He
was accompanied by Kedar Pandit on tabla and Appa
Jalgaokar on the harmonium. |
