Miya -Biwi ka Malhar!!

Miya & Biwi i.e. husband & wife as couple, assume vital importance in inter personal relationship. They are, indeed , the pillars of  every “Sansar”, every family. In our Indian classical music and dance also they have always played significant role. In most of  the music families, both love and understand music. Though, only one of them may be a performing artist. Very few of them are individually performing-artists. And, indeed, its absolutely rare that couple  professionally perform  together, on stage. As you know malhar aavishkar concerts have always been based on innovative themes, like Ek Pariwar-Ek Malhar, Yuva-Jugal, Pune Malhar etc . In my quest for innovative theme, I struck upon the theme : Miya Biwi ka Malhar ! It was herculean task to search the couple who perform together and that too who are absolutely pure and yet highly entertaining…to please discerning Pune audience. My friends like Ajay Pohankar, Suresh Talwalkar, Vikas Kashalkar , Kalinath Mishra, Manjiri Dhamankar rendered valuable help. After search of more than three months all over India, Friends, I could gather artists for Miya Biwi ka Malhar !  They are Gems in Music, they are Gems in inter personal relationships! Each couple will perform for abt sixty minutes. Six items of Malhar-Duets  ( Vocal, Instrument and Dance ) will be staged in pre-structured sequence to build-up  the tempo to reach musical-climax. Dr Vikas Kashalkar is senior vocalist and music-scholar. As main artists take stage, Dr Kashalkar will  lucidly explain fine nuances of respective Malhar Raag, its ascending and descending notes, minute variations, Chalan (rendering),Thaat (stylized group) as also interesting anecdotes . He will also sing/hum a few lines of familiar bandish, natyageet or film song. Sh Pranav Paralikar  , young flautist, will play few “aavrtanas” of the Raag. Immediately thereafter, main artists will present respective Malhar. This demo of  3-4 minutes connects the Raag closely with Rasik. He understand the Raag better and add to his pleasure. It creates  ambience of Malhar  !  The close linkages  , melodious renderings, continuity  of musical flow, building up of tempo in rich cultural ambience are to be reveled-in , rather  than talking about it. Malhar Aavishkar is an experience audience cherishes for long and looks forward to rejuvenate every year.

A special feature is : Solo Odissi Dance of Kuastavi Sarkar. She is young vivacious dancer, now based in USA . Malhar Raag depicts  serious emotions. Duet sometimes is  knotty/chatty. : Nancy Kulkarni :

Originally from Canada, Nancy Kulkarni is a classically-trained cellist who has devoted herself to the study and performance of dhrupad music on the cello for the last 28 years. Before pursuing dhrupad, she was Co-Principal Cellist of the Rome Festival Orchestra and Section Cellist with the Chicago Civic Orchestra and Orchestra del Maggio Musicale of Florence, Italy.

Nancy has been studying dhrupad in India since 1982. She is deeply grateful for the training she received from senior dhrupad vocalist Dr. Ritwik Sanyal, and the renowned veena and vocal brothers Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar.

Nancy has given over 200 dhrupad recitals and lecture/demonstrations at Western universities and concert halls, and in major cities in India. She was twice awarded the Senior Performing Arts Fellowship by the American Institute of Indian Studies, and was the featured artist in the films, "Through My Eyes" by Mani Kaul, and "Vihir" by Umesh Kulkarni. Nancy's playing has been presented several times on National Public Radio, All-India Radio, and she has released three solo CDs.

Nancy has made several modifications to her cello for Indian music. There are two extra strings that are plucked in the chikari style of the veena. Her four playing strings pass over a sloping elk-horn nut, modeled after the veena to produce a ringing tone. She has adopted the Indian posture, holding the cello while seated on a carpet. She plays without vibrato, so that subtle ornaments are clearly articulated.

Nancy resides in Pune, India, where she continues her dhrupad study and performance.
