Srushtike Saath… Sangeet Sair.. Karnatak-ka Malhar aur Pune-ka bhi Malhar!!
Karnatak Malhar!!
Hindustani Classical Khayal Style by Karnatak Artists

As you know, malhar aavishkar concerts have always been based on innovative, unique themes, like Bade Guru ke Bade - Shishya ka-Malhar, Ek Pariwar….. Ek Malhar, Yuva-Jugal, Miya Biwi ka Malhar & Pune Malhar etc . Contribution of Karnataka artists in our Khayal Sangeet is indeed valuable. Cities like Mysore, Dharwad, Hubli, Belgaum, Bangalore, Mangalore have fertile soil for Hindustani classical music. Legendary Artists like Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Kumar Gandharv, Gangubai Hangal, Basavrajguru, have been nurtured in Karnatak. Kathak (young Hari & Chetana), Odissi (Nrityagram, Sharmila Mukerji, Madhulita Mohapatra, Uday Kumar Shetty & Soumya Uday Kumar), Bharat Natyam and Kuchipudi (Vyajanthi Kashi) dancers have also found sanctuary in Karnatak. The culture of both the states have common strings : vocal or instrument or even Ghungaroos ! In my quest for innovative theme, I thought of weaving Karnatak Malhar in Pune. Its probably for the first time all Karnatak Artist will perform on one stage in Pune or perhaps in India! That too in Kannad Sangh Hall !! It was truly a herculean task to search Nine Karnataka artists to perform malhar raag and that too absolutely pure and yet highly entertaining…to please discerning Pune audience.

Each artist will perform for abt sixty minutes. Nine items of Malhar Raag (Three Vocal, Three Instrument and Two Dance,) will be staged in pre-structured sequence. It build-up the tempo to reach musical-climax. Raag is not repeated. Its absolute specialty of Malhar Aavishkar. Dr Vikas Kashalkar is senior vocalist and music-scholar. He will discuss with the artist to allot specific Malhar Raag. The options are : Joad-Raags like Nat Malhar, Des Malhar, Jayant Malhar as also Megh, Mia Malhar, Sur Malhar, Gaud Malhar, Ramdasi Malhar, and anavat Raags like Mira Malhar, Kukubi Malhar, Chanchalsas Malhar, Gaundgiri Malhar, Charjuki Malhar and many more. As main artists take stage, Dr Kashalkar will lucidly explain fine nuances of respective Malhar Raag, its ascending and descending notes, minute variations, Chalan (rendering),Thaat (stylized group) as also interesting anecdotes . He will also sing/hum a few lines of familiar bandish, natyageet or film song. Sh Pranav Paralikar, young flautist, will play few "aavrtanas" of the Raag. Immediately thereafter, main artists will present respective Malhar. This demo of 3-4 minutes connects the Raag closely with Rasik. He understand the Raag better and add to his pleasure. It creates ambience of Malhar! The close linkages, melodious renderings, continuity of musical flow, building up of tempo in rich cultural ambience are to be reveled-in, rather than talking about it. Malhar Aavishkar is an experience audience cherishes for long and looks forward to rejuvenate every year.

Young & matured talented Karnatak artists, who have received more than 15 years authentic, traditional training (Talim) from Respected Guru of established Gharana and who have been performing on stage for more than ten years, have been selected and teamed-up for Karnatak Malhar concerts. We have very carefully selected each Artist to present Malhar Raag in : vocal & instrument music as well as Dance forms of Kathak, Odissi,& Kuchipudi. Malhar Raag depicts serious emotions. We are confident these artists will combine these contrasting emotive feelings to enhance entertainment-value, retaining the purity. Diversity of forms & styles of Music (Vocal & Instrumental) and Dance (Kathak, Odissi & Kuchipudi) will be the highlights of Malhar Aavishkar Concert-2011 .

Poornima was initiated into Hindustani Classical vocal music by Smt. Usha Datar at a very early age of 12 years. It is here that the foundation of classical music was firmly entrenched. She then received unstinted advanced training from the Sur-Sagar, trainer par excellence, the late Padmabhushan Pt. Basavaraj Rajguru. Under him, Poornima blossomed into a full fledged vocalist.

Poornima also received valuable guidance from Pt. Vasant Kankapur of Dharwad and Smt. Kusum Shende of Pune for light music. She also has the privilege of training under Smt. Kusum Shende, Pune, Smt. Usha Chipalkatti, Pune and Pt. Murli Manohar Shukla, Mumbai, in later years for classical music.
